Maldives Cracks Down on Vape Oil Drug Smuggling

Maldives Customs has intercepted shipments of cannabis cleverly disguised as vape oil. This alarming trend has prompted swift action from the government, aiming to curb the illicit flow of drugs into the country.

Innovative Smuggling Tactics Unveiled

Drug traffickers are getting crafty, hiding cannabis in vape cartridges to slip past authorities.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, announced on ‘X’ that customs officials have seized multiple shipments attempting this deceptive method. On May 14, vape cartridges containing cannabis were confiscated, raising red flags about the increasing misuse of vaping devices.

Government Responds with Import Ban

In response to these incidents, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has taken decisive action.

Starting November 15, 2024, the Maldives will ban the import of all vaping devices and components. From December onward, the use, possession, manufacture, sale, advertising, and distribution of vaping devices will be prohibited nationwide. The government is serious about eliminating this new avenue for drug smuggling.

Protecting the Youth from Hidden Dangers

Authorities are particularly concerned about the impact on children.

Minister Ihusaan highlighted that drug-laced vape devices are being distributed to schoolchildren. This poses a significant threat to the health and safety of young Maldivians. The ban aims to protect the youth from unknowingly consuming harmful substances.

A Nationwide Effort to Combat Drug Trafficking

The Maldives is ramping up efforts to thwart drug smuggling in all forms.

Customs and law enforcement agencies are on high alert. The government’s proactive measures signify a commitment to safeguarding the nation. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed and report any suspicious activities to help in this crucial fight.
