£61,000 in Illegal Tobacco Seized as Barnet Cracks Down on Illicit Trade

A major crackdown in Barnet led to the seizure of illegal tobacco products worth an estimated £61,000, marking a significant move in the fight against the underground tobacco trade. On October 16, Trading Standards officers from Barnet Council, with the aid of sniffer dogs, uncovered a substantial quantity of illicit goods hidden in local shops. These items, including foreign-labelled and duty-evaded products, were concealed in specially constructed hideaways, demonstrating the lengths some businesses go to avoid detection.

Thousands of Illicit Goods Confiscated

During the operation, officers confiscated thousands of non-compliant tobacco products that failed to meet UK regulatory standards. The haul included:

  • 2,634 packets of cigarettes: These products, sold at prices below regulated rates, are especially tempting for consumers.
  • 199 pouches of hand-rolling tobacco: Popular for their affordability, these pouches circumvent taxes, further cutting costs.
  • 1,513 vapes: With a significant market among younger demographics, these are often unregulated and may contain harmful substances.

The illegal market capitalizes on financial hardship, selling at reduced prices and making it easier for young people and financially vulnerable individuals to access harmful products. Alongside tobacco products, officers also discovered a significant stash of counterfeit clothing, potentially doubling the value of the seized goods.

Barnet’s Commitment to Eradicating Illegal Trade

Councillor Barry Rawlings, the Leader of Barnet Council, expressed a strong stance on illegal sales, emphasizing the council’s dedication to supporting law-abiding businesses while pursuing those that undermine the law. “There is no excuse for selling products that can be harmful, deprive the public purse of revenue, and are often linked to global profiteering,” Rawlings stated, underscoring the local government’s commitment to halting the trade in Barnet.

The seized goods were taken to a secure location and will serve as evidence in potential legal proceedings. Barnet Council’s tough approach sends a clear message: businesses that repeatedly breach the law will face consequences. Penalties could include not only fines and prison sentences but also potential forced closures for persistent offenders.

Operation CeCe: Targeting All Levels of the Illicit Tobacco Market

This large-scale seizure in Barnet is part of Operation CeCe, a broader initiative aimed at dismantling the illicit tobacco trade. The operation is funded by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and targets every level of the market, from small retailers to international organized crime networks. Trading Standards officers are collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies, working to disrupt this illegal network that spans from local shops to global markets.

Operation CeCe represents a government-led effort to not only reduce access to illegal tobacco but also tackle the complex supply chains that drive it. By removing these products from circulation, authorities aim to protect consumers from the health risks of unregulated tobacco and ensure that tax revenues are appropriately collected and allocated to public services.
