Mayor Ruffy Biazon Urges DTI to Amend Vape Law to Protect Minors

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon has called on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to seek amendments to the Vape Regulation Law to better protect minors. In light of the recent suspension of vape product sales on online marketplaces, Biazon emphasized the need to ban online sales of vape products and increase the age limit for access. He highlighted concerns that the current law allows minors to easily obtain these products, posing significant health risks. This move aims to strengthen regulations and safeguard the well-being of young people.

Mayor Biazon’s primary concern is the ease with which minors can access vape products through online platforms. He pointed out that the current law, Republic Act 11900, inadvertently facilitates this access by not explicitly prohibiting online sales. Biazon argued that this loophole must be closed to prevent minors from purchasing vape products, which can have serious health implications.

The suspension of online vape sales has already shown positive effects, but Biazon believes that a permanent ban is necessary. He urged the DTI to recommend amendments to the law that would explicitly prohibit the online sale of vape products. This measure would significantly reduce the availability of these products to minors and help curb their use among young people.

In addition to banning online sales, Biazon suggested increasing the age limit for purchasing vape products. He noted that raising the age limit would further restrict access and protect minors from the harmful effects of vaping. This proposal aligns with global trends, where many countries have implemented stricter age restrictions on vape products.

Health Risks and the Need for Stricter Regulations

The health risks associated with vaping, particularly among minors, are well-documented. Studies have shown that vaping can lead to nicotine addiction, respiratory issues, and other health problems. Mayor Biazon emphasized that protecting the health of young people should be a top priority, and stricter regulations are essential to achieving this goal.

Biazon highlighted the role of information technology experts in identifying the risks posed by online sales of vape products. These experts have warned that the current regulatory framework is insufficient to prevent minors from accessing these products. By amending the law to include a ban on online sales and higher age limits, the government can address these concerns and enhance the protection of minors.

The mayor also called for increased public awareness campaigns to educate parents and young people about the dangers of vaping. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach that includes both regulatory measures and educational initiatives. By raising awareness and implementing stricter regulations, the government can create a safer environment for young people.

Collaborative Efforts for Effective Implementation

Mayor Biazon’s call for amendments to the Vape Regulation Law underscores the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, health advocates, and the community. He urged the DTI to work closely with other stakeholders to develop and implement effective regulations that protect minors from the risks associated with vaping.

Biazon also emphasized the importance of enforcement in ensuring the success of these regulations. He called for increased monitoring and penalties for those who violate the law, particularly online sellers who continue to offer vape products to minors. By strengthening enforcement mechanisms, the government can ensure that the amended regulations are effectively implemented.

The mayor’s proposal has received support from various health advocacy groups, who have long called for stricter regulations on vape products. These groups have praised Biazon’s proactive approach and expressed hope that the DTI will take swift action to amend the law. The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders will be crucial in creating a regulatory framework that effectively protects minors from the dangers of vaping.
