No Tobacco Day in Siliguri: Promoting Awareness and Safeguarding Children

Siliguri, June 1, 2024 – World No Tobacco Day was commemorated today in Siliguri, West Bengal, with a strong focus on raising awareness about the harmful consequences of tobacco use. The event aimed to inform the general population, especially children, about the risks associated with tobacco consumption.

This year’s theme emphasizes “Safeguarding Children Against Tobacco Industry Influence.” The use of tobacco, in any form, poses significant hazards and currently results in 8 million fatalities worldwide each year. To mark this occasion, North Bengal Dental College and Hospital, in collaboration with Medica Cancer Hospital in Rangapani, organized an oral screening camp and a walkathon.

Health Screening and Scientific Session

Residents from various urban and suburban communities, including Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Naxalbari, and Odlabari, actively participated in the health screening event. The scientific session, hosted by North Bengal Dental College, featured case studies presented by Dr. Manish Goswami and Dr. Satadru Roy. They discussed treatment options available at Medica Cancer Hospital and highlighted the severe impact of tobacco on health, particularly its link to oral cancer.

Urgent Need for Awareness

While North Bengal Medical College has made progress in recent times, continuous efforts to raise awareness among children are crucial. Preventing future generations from getting addicted to tobacco requires consistent education and vigilance. Medical professionals, including medical superintendent and vice-principal of NBMCH, stress the importance of spreading awareness and implementing strict measures to eradicate tobacco usage.

As Siliguri joins the global movement against tobacco, it reaffirms its commitment to creating a tobacco-free world. By safeguarding children and promoting awareness, we take a step closer to a healthier future for all.
