Marijuana Grows Face Ban in Coldwater’s Industrial Areas

Coldwater’s city officials are making moves that could significantly impact the local cannabis industry. In a recent meeting, the City Council voted 7-2 to introduce an ordinance aiming to eliminate marijuana grow establishments from industrial zones. This decision comes after years of discussions and reflects ongoing concerns within the community.

Council’s Bold Step Forward

Change is on the horizon for Coldwater’s industrial landscape. With the proposed ordinance, marijuana cultivation would no longer be part of the special land use approval process in industrial zones.

  • Four special land use requests had been approved since May 2021.
  • Only Craft Leaf LLC at 211 West Garfield holds licenses from both the state and city.
  • Limitations are expected to be placed on existing licensed businesses like Craft Leaf.

These developments suggest a tightening grip on where and how marijuana businesses can operate within the city.

Concerns Over Odor and Legal Risks

You might be wondering what’s fueling this sudden shift. One of the main issues raised is the smell emanating from grow facilities, which has been a sticking point for residents and officials alike.

Council member Jim Knaack didn’t hold back, questioning City Attorney Amanda O’Boyle about potential legal repercussions. O’Boyle acknowledged that while the ordinance could bring challenges, it also allows for certain restrictions on current operations.

Council members Emily Rissman and John Petzko weren’t convinced, casting the two dissenting votes. Their concerns highlight the ongoing debate over balancing economic opportunities with community well-being.

What’s Next for Marijuana Businesses?

So, where does this leave the cannabis industry in Coldwater? The second reading and final adoption of the ordinance are slated for October 28. Until then, the fate of future and existing marijuana businesses hangs in the balance.

Interestingly, while grower licenses have been permitted in D-2 Heavy Industrial zones with special approval, no applications have been made for microbusinesses in C-4 General Business zones. This could indicate a shift in where entrepreneurs might focus their efforts moving forward.
