A congressional hearing on “exploring alternatives to fetal tissue research” was held this Thursday, where Dr. Sally Temple clearly mentioned that there were no alternatives. This statement was made straightaway to the lawmakers who constantly kept arising the topic of “pro-life” all through the hearing.
Dr. Temple who was ignored throughout the session said that she shared the perspective of about 4000 research colleagues’ form all around the world. She was a representative of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. She has also been awarded by MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” for her scientific research work.
She says that Fetal tissue was the most important source to study genetics, therapies for cancer and other inborn disorders, Tuberculosis, Zika Virus response, and HIV. Though one cannot replace the entire fetal tissue, the alternatives can be used.
She testified attended the session to get the world to know, especially the House of Republicans which is trying to convince Donald Trump to stop the funding related to the researches being carried out using the dead fetal tissues and organ or tissue replacement therapies through the same. An anti-abortion meet was also held with the White House earlier this month. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has stopped the research of many in the country who work on fetal tissues, thereby pausing one main government-funded project that aims to find a solution through fetal tissue replacement in HIV. This can be a halt to the progression in cancer therapy, as according to the STAT.
