The proposition
TIMES OF CANNABIS reaches an audience most cannabis marketing never touches: adults who read policy analysis, industry reporting, and research coverage because they make decisions in this space. They are patients, professionals, operators, investors, and serious observers, and they are here for journalism rather than entertainment. If your product or service is relevant to that audience and can be advertised honestly and lawfully, we should talk. Write to support@timesofcannabis.com with the subject line ADVERTISING.
Read this before writing
Advertising on this site comes with conditions that we do not negotiate, because they are the reason the audience is worth reaching. They are stated here so that no one spends a week on a proposal we cannot accept.
What advertising buys, and what it does not
- Advertising buys placement: your message, clearly presented as advertising, in front of our readers.
- It does not buy coverage, mentions, review scores, rankings, interviews, or softer treatment in news stories. The editorial team does not know who is buying ads when it plans coverage, and it has written critically about advertisers before and will again.
- It does not buy protection. Buying advertising here neither invites nor prevents reporting about you.
- It does not buy our readers’ data. We sell attention, not identities, consistent with our privacy policy.
The full separation between revenue and editorial is documented on our ownership and funding page, which we encourage prospective advertisers to read as a description of the environment their brand will appear in.
Standards for ad content
Every advertisement must clear the following, and we reject or pull those that do not:
- Lawful where shown. Advertisers are responsible for ensuring their ads and offers comply with the laws of every jurisdiction where they choose to be seen, including cannabis advertising restrictions, which vary enormously and change often. We may geographically restrict or decline campaigns that cannot demonstrate compliance.
- No medical claims. Ads may not claim that cannabis or any cannabis product treats, cures, or prevents any disease or condition. Given what this publication writes about overclaimed science, running such ads would be self-parody, and we will not.
- Adults only. No creative directed at minors, no imagery or themes with youth appeal, no placement strategies aimed at underage audiences.
- Honest. No false or unsubstantiated claims, no fake scarcity, no misleading pricing, no impersonation of editorial formats. An ad that imitates a news article will be rejected on sight.
- Safe and decent. No promotion of unlawful sales channels, no encouragement of irresponsible consumption, and nothing that a reasonable reader would consider deceptive or exploitative.
Formats
- Display advertising across the site’s sections, always distinguishable from editorial content.
- Sponsored content, where accepted: paid articles labeled as sponsored, visually distinct from journalism, and subject to the same content standards as ads. Editorial staff do not write praise for sponsors, and labeling rules come from our editorial standards, not from the sponsor’s preferences.
- Affiliate arrangements, disclosed to readers in every article where they appear. Note that affiliate status does not cause coverage; editorial selection always precedes any link.
How to proceed
Send a short note to support@timesofcannabis.com describing your company, what you want to advertise, the audience and regions you are targeting, and your timeline. We will respond within a few business days with availability, specifications, and rates. If your campaign falls outside the standards above, we will say so plainly and early, which is the same way we handle everything else on this site.
